The
Village Market
Many women
of San Pedro Columbia (or their children), hoping for a little cash income,
walk a c ouple
miles daily to the Maya ruin outside the village to sell their crafts.
They wait all day, and maybe one car will come, with visitors that often
have seen the same crafts at previous stops. Still, the sellers return
to the ruin the next day. Your purchase will create an important alternative
for some of the women in the village, and in return, you will be rewarded
with a quality product.
The Columbia women are well known for their fine embroidery. The Dancing
Jaguar is an ancient Maya design introduced in Columbia by IAIA. The jaguar
was an important symbol for the ancient Maya and, as king of the jungles
of Central America, it is feared and revered by the modern-day Maya as
well. The 8"x12" Dancing Jaguar made especially for you will
arrive at your home in a wooden frame with glass and a card introducing
the woman who sewed it. Expect to see it within six weeks of receipt of
your order.
Our cacao nuggets are made of organic unsweetened chocolate, harvested
by the village farmers and processed by the village women. Each nugget
contains approximately one tablespoon grated chocolate. It stores well
and grates easily. Enjoy natural chocolate drinks and have fun adapting
your favorite chocolate recipes. Your order will arrive with an information
sheet about growing and harvesting cacao and a couple recipes to get you
started. The harvesting season is December through July.
